Teach Now is recruiting a SEN Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 autism support to a Nursery-aged child in Barnet. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who understands that progress can start with a comfortable transition, a shared moment of play or a new way to communicate.

About the role

As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you will help the child access Nursery routines and play-based Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning. Working with the class teacher and SENCO, you will adapt your support to the child’s developmental level, communication preferences and sensory needs, helping them participate at their own pace.

Your responsibilities

• Provide consistent 1:1 support during Nursery routines, activities and transitions.

• Support communication and interaction, using visual structure and predictable routines where appropriate.

• Recognise early signs of sensory overload or dysregulation, allowing space and time to regulate without overwhelming the child with language.

• Adapt sensory activities, messy play and continuous provision to the child’s interests and developmental stage.

• Encourage positive peer interaction without forcing social engagement, while gradually building independence.

• Work towards individual targets agreed with the teacher and SENCO, sharing observations and providing personal-care support where required.

What we’re looking for

The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will bring patience, warmth and a calm, responsive approach. You will ideally have:

• Experience supporting children with autism or additional needs, particularly within Nursery or EYFS.

• An understanding of communication differences, sensory needs and emotional regulation.

• Confidence following individual support strategies and working collaboratively with colleagues.

• A willingness to support age-appropriate personal care.

• A commitment to safeguarding and inclusive practice.

Experience supporting non-verbal Early Years children is particularly valuable. A relevant childcare, Early Years or teaching assistant qualification is desirable. Applicants must be based in the UK and have the right to work in the UK; visa sponsorship is unavailable.
