Consultant Gastroenterologist

Overview
Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust require 1 dynamic and forward-thinking Consultant to join the Gastroenterology team. This post will be based at the University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) site: one of two acute sites operated by the Trust, with the other being Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Woolwich. We are currently looking for 1 Consultant Gastroenterologist, with one post having a specialist interest in IBD; the sub-speciality for the second can be explored more flexibly. The post is a 10 PA appointment, with the post-holder expected to undertake 2 endoscopy lists and clinics each week, while participating in in-patient ward work reviewing acute Gastroenterology admissions, and to participate in the on-call GI Bleed rota.The Gastroenterology Department at UHL consists of 6 Consultants, 2 Registrars, a Specialist Doctor and three specialist nurses (IBD and viral hepatitis). The establishment at the QEH site includes 6 Consultants, 2 Specialist Registrars, 3 Clinical Fellows and 3 specialist nurses with responsibilities for IBD, viral hepatitis and endoscopy. A number of specialist Gastroenterology services have been established at the Trust including ERCP, oesophageal physiology, capsule endoscopy and fibro scanning.Responsibilities
To undertake high quality diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopyTo participate in the provision of a high quality out-patient Gastroenterology service, including patient administrationTo manage Gastroenterology in-patientsKey tasks
Attend the weekly multidisciplinary meetings and weekly governance meetingsActive participation in the management and development of the specialty and the introduction of new servicesContribute to the educational programme, including weekly departmental meetings and teachingAct as the joint clinical supervisor for SpRs in GastroenterologyParticipation in Pathology and Multidisciplinary Team MeetingsParticipation in medical auditParticipation in the Trust consultant appraisal processComply with Continuing Professional Development and revalidation requirements as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians, with time and financial support provided by the TrustA senior consultant will be nominated to each appointee to act as a mentor during the first 12 months in postAbout us

MBBS or equivalentMRCP or equivalentCCT for Gastroenterology and General MedicineDesirable and Sub-specialties
Distinctions, scholarships, prizes; other degrees such as BSc, MSc, MD; sub-specialist interests including nutrition, hepatology and IBDRegistration
Full GMC RegistrationTo be on the Specialist Register for Gastroenterology on the date of commencement or within 6 months of obtaining CCTClinical Experience and Attributes
Leadership, ability to work under pressure and within a multidisciplinary teamClear communication with patients and colleaguesWillingness to participate in NHS management and service developmentAudit, Teaching and CPD
Understanding of audit principles and experience in presenting at national/international meetingsExperience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate traineesCommitment to ongoing professional development and annual appraisalOther Information
