We are looking for an experienced
Assistant Consultant or Consultant Soil Scientist
to support the growth of our soil team, particularly working with colleagues in Ground and Water, Nature Advisory, Landscape, Environmental Planning, and Sustainability Policy and Compliance. You will join a small soil team to help expand our capabilities and embed soil understanding across the business.The role will be both office and site based, with an estimated 50/50 split between site and office over the year. Location is flexible; there is a mix of home-based and in-office work with travel to client sites as required. You will be a strong relationship builder, well-organised, adaptable, and aware of the commercial demands of consultancy work. You should have the ambition to help grow the team to meet rising demand for specialist soils science.You will undertake fieldwork/site visits and support the production of written reports for Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), Soil Resource Assessments, and tailored assessments for Environmental Statements. You will work with our Nature Advisory and Landscape teams in supporting Landscape and Ecological Management Plans. You will manage data to support technical reporting, provide advice to colleagues, and liaise with clients, landowners, contractors, statutory authorities and third parties.The post is within our Ground and Water team, a service line in WSP''s Earth and Environment business.A Typical Week Would Include
Preparing for and undertaking soil surveys or supporting the delivery of reports for DCOs, EIAs and other assessments with the wider environmental teams.Supporting colleagues across the UK with project delivery, assisting in data management, survey coordination and risk assessment for site works.Learning and being supported by a team of experienced technical staff of various grades and sharing your knowledge with others.What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate
Degree level qualification in Soil Science, or similar (physical geology, environmental science) with 3-5 years relevant practical experienceExperience in completing Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) surveys, Soil Resource Surveys and site supervision during construction works (ideally to BSSS competency standards)A thorough grounding in HandS procedures for site workA team player, happy and able to work with geographically spread teamExcellent communication and report writing skillsRegistered with a relevant professional body (e.g. British Society Soil Science)Desirable knowledge of UK environmental legislation, construction impacts on agricultural land, and understanding of UK agricultural practice and business issuesEnjoy working as part of a team and being accountable for your workWorking knowledge of applied GISFull driving licence and enjoy working outdoorsDon’t quite meet all the criteria?
