Project Engineer

Location: Flexible across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire
Salary: Up to £65,514
Working pattern: Hybrid - typically 2 days WFH and 3 days across site/project offices

The Opportunity

As a Project Engineer, you''ll support the construction and delivery of a major UK rail infrastructure programme, taking engineering responsibility for a specific section, asset or area of construction.

You''ll be close to the day-to-day engineering activity, managing technical queries, short-notice changes and assurance requirements as construction progresses. You''ll work directly with contractors, subcontractors and designers to resolve issues while ensuring engineering and technical assurance requirements are maintained.

You won''t need to come from one specific discipline. Experience across structures, highways, earthworks or wider civil engineering is relevant, with the opportunity to develop broader multidisciplinary experience.

Reporting to a Senior Project Engineer, you''ll manage immediate engineering requirements within your area while escalating more complex or route-wide matters where appropriate.

What You''ll Be Doing

·Taking engineering responsibility for a defined section, asset or construction area.
·Managing technical issues and queries arising during construction.
·Responding to short-notice engineering changes and ensuring appropriate technical assurance.
·Working directly with contractors, subcontractors and designers to resolve technical issues.
·Challenging proposed solutions where engineering or assurance requirements are not met.
·Having confident conversations with contractors and senior stakeholders when issues need resolving.
·Understanding the contractual and commercial implications of technical decisions and change.
·Coordinating with other engineering disciplines and escalating complex issues when required.

Your Experience

You''ll have experience within civil engineering, rail, highways or major infrastructure construction, with a practical understanding of engineering delivery during the construction stage.

Experience across structures, highways or earthworks would be beneficial, although broader engineering experience is equally relevant. You''ll understand technical assurance, technical queries and engineering change and be confident working directly with contractors and subcontractors.

You''ll also bring good commercial and contractual awareness, strong stakeholder-management skills and the ability to respond effectively when priorities or technical requirements change at short notice.

There is flexibility around your base location, with opportunities across different sections of the route. A typical week could involve 2 days working from home and 3 days across site/project offices, including at least one site day. Regular travel will be required, so being able to drive will be important for the role.
