Job Purpose

We are seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Electrical Maintenance Engineer to join our Estates team on a permanent, static basis. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of all electrical systems and building services across our educational campus.

From lecture halls and science labs to student accommodation and sports facilities, you will play a critical role in maintaining a safe and productive learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM): Execute a comprehensive schedule of electrical PPM tasks across the campus, including emergency lighting testing, fire alarm checks, switchgear maintenance, and distribution board inspections.

  • Reactive Maintenance: Respond swiftly and efficiently to electrical faults, breakdowns, and user-reported issues. Diagnose faults and carry out remedial repairs to minimize disruption to learning schedules.

  • Compliance & Testing: Ensure all electrical works comply with current wiring regulations ([insert regional standard, e.g., BS 7671 / 18th Edition]). Assist with Fixed Wire Testing (EICR) and maintain accurate compliance logs.

  • Minor Installations: Undertake small-scale installation projects, such as upgrading lighting systems (LED retrofits), installing additional power sockets, and modifying existing circuits.

  • Subcontractor Management: Escort, supervise, and induct external electrical contractors when specialist high-voltage (HV) or complex system work is required.

  • Health & Safety: Maintain strict adherence to health and safety regulations. Conduct risk assessments, issue permits to work, and ensure safe isolation procedures (Lock Out, Tag Out) are strictly followed.

Qualifications and Experience

Required:

  • Technical Qualification: Fully qualified electrician holding relevant city/national certifications (e.g., NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installations, City & Guilds 2360/2330).

  • Regulations: Up-to-date certification in current wiring regulations (e.g., 18th Edition / BS 7671).

  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a commercial or institutional maintenance environment (prior experience in education, healthcare, or hospitality is highly desirable).

Preferred:

  • City & Guilds 2391 (or equivalent) in Inspection and Testing.

  • Experience working with Building Management Systems (BMS).

  • Basic cross-skilling in mechanical or plumbing maintenance.
