Technical Construction Project manager
Technical Construction Project Manager
Career Progression into Operations Management
Location: Leeds / West Yorkshire
Salary: £50,000–£60,000 DOE (subject to confirmation)
Sector: Commercial Construction / Steel-Framed Buildings
The Opportunity
We are recruiting on behalf of a growing construction business specialising in steel-framed buildings and commercial construction projects.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Construction Project Manager or Contracts Manager who is looking to take the next step in their career.
Our client is looking for somebody with strong technical construction knowledge who can take ownership of projects, manage the day-to-day challenges of construction delivery and work closely with the Managing Director as the business continues to grow.
Initially, the role will involve managing projects from the technical and procurement stages through to completion, ensuring work is delivered efficiently, to the required standards and within agreed budgets and timescales.
Longer term, there is the opportunity for the successful candidate to develop into a wider Operations Management position, taking increasing responsibility for project delivery and the operational side of the business.
This is particularly suited to somebody who enjoys being hands-on, taking responsibility and solving problems, rather than simply delegating tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage commercial construction projects from technical planning and procurement through to completion.
- Review and interpret architectural and structural drawings, specifications and construction details.
- Identify design discrepancies, technical issues and potential problems before they impact project delivery.
- Coordinate structural steelwork, roofing, cladding and associated construction packages.
- Manage procurement, supplier orders, materials and delivery schedules.
- Coordinate subcontractors, site managers and other project personnel.
- Monitor project programmes, budgets, costs, variations and quality.
- Resolve technical queries and day-to-day operational challenges.
- Liaise with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and design professionals.
- Ensure projects meet the required safety, quality and compliance standards.
- Maintain project documentation, quality assurance records and handover information.
- Support improvements to project management systems and operational processes.
- As the business develops, take increasing responsibility for overseeing multiple projects and wider operational performance.
About You
We are particularly interested in speaking with experienced Construction Project Managers, Contracts Managers or technically strong construction professionals who have the ability to manage projects independently.
Ideally, you will have:
- Experience managing commercial or industrial construction projects.
- Strong technical understanding of construction methods and processes.
- Knowledge of steel-framed buildings, roofing and cladding systems.
- The ability to confidently read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Experience managing subcontractors, suppliers and site teams.
- A good understanding of construction programming, procurement, budgets and variations.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
- The confidence to make decisions and take ownership of project delivery.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work with people at all levels.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of how project decisions affect costs and profitability.
- The ambition to develop into a more senior operational role as the business grows.
Relevant construction qualifications would be advantageous, although practical experience and proven ability are equally important.
Career Development
What makes this opportunity particularly interesting is the potential to grow alongside the business.
Initially, you'll be responsible for managing construction projects and supporting the Managing Director with the technical and operational aspects of delivery.
As the company expands, there is scope for the position to develop into a broader Operations Management role, with responsibilities potentially including:
- Overseeing multiple construction projects.
- Managing and developing project and site teams.
- Improving operational systems and processes.
- Managing resources, subcontractors and supplier performance.
- Monitoring project costs, programmes and profitability.
- Supporting the overall development and performance of the construction operation.
What's on Offer

- Vehicle or car allowance, subject to confirmation.
- Opportunity to join a growing construction business.
- A varied and technically involved role with real responsibility.
- The chance to work closely with the Managing Director.
- Autonomy to manage projects and influence how work is delivered.
