Quantity Surveyor - London & South East

Location: London or Tunbridge Wells
Sector: Construction Consultancy
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

The Opportunity

An established construction consultancy is looking to recruit a motivated Quantity Surveyor to join its growing Cost Management team across London and the South East.
This is an excellent opportunity for a consultant approaching chartership who is ready to take on greater responsibility, manage their own project workstreams and develop their career within a supportive and collaborative environment.
You will work on a diverse portfolio of high-profile projects across sectors including commercial real estate, healthcare, education, residential, public sector, heritage, life sciences and mixed-use developments.
Working alongside experienced Senior Cost Managers, Associate Directors and Directors, you will deliver high-quality cost management services, build strong client relationships and gain exposure to increasingly complex projects. The role offers a clear progression pathway towards Senior Quantity Surveyor / Senior Cost Manager.
The team operates a flexible, hybrid working model, with access to offices in London, Tunbridge Wells, Epsom and Oxford, depending on project and client requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cost Management: Deliver cost consultancy services throughout the project lifecycle, including feasibility studies, estimates, cost plans, cash flow forecasts, benchmarking, cost analysis and commercial reporting.
  • Procurement: Prepare and review bills of quantities, schedules of work, tender documentation and contract documentation. Support procurement strategies, tender evaluations, contractor recommendations and commercial negotiations.
  • Post-Contract Services: Manage project costs during delivery, including valuations, cost forecasting, change control, final accounts, fee monitoring and invoicing.
  • Contract Administration: Provide commercial advice and support contract administration under JCT, NEC and other relevant forms of contract.
  • Risk and Value Management: Identify project risks, cost drivers and opportunities for value engineering, providing clear advice to help clients make informed decisions.
  • Client and Stakeholder Management: Build effective relationships with clients, consultants and contractors, attending project meetings and communicating commercial information clearly.
  • Project Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, building surveyors, designers, engineers and other specialists to deliver coordinated project solutions.
  • Business Development: Contribute to bids, proposals, case studies and market engagement, helping strengthen client relationships and generate repeat business.
  • Team Development: Support graduates, apprentices and assistant-level colleagues, contributing to knowledge sharing and the wider development of the team.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • A degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related discipline.
  • Experience delivering quantity surveying or cost management services within a construction consultancy, client-side or contracting environment.
  • Experience across one or more built environment sectors, such as commercial, healthcare, education, residential, public sector, life sciences or mixed-use development.
  • A sound understanding of pre- and post-contract cost management, including cost plans, estimates, tender documentation and commercial reporting.
  • Working knowledge of UK construction contracts, particularly JCT and/or NEC.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and commercial skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Confident communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with clients, consultants and contractors.
  • A proactive and organised approach, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver work to agreed deadlines.
  • The ability to take ownership of defined responsibilities while working collaboratively as part of a wider team.
  • MRICS status or be approaching chartership, with a commitment to achieving professional qualification within approximately six months of appointment.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and experience using cost management and measurement software such as CostX or similar platforms.

What Success Looks Like

You will take ownership of your project responsibilities, delivering accurate, commercially sound advice to clients while identifying risks, changes and emerging issues at an early stage.
As you develop in the role, you will gain increasing confidence in client management, project delivery and commercial decision-making, with opportunities to lead smaller commissions and take on more complex work.
You will also contribute to the development of junior colleagues, share technical knowledge and work towards achieving chartership, building a strong foundation for progression into a Senior Quantity Surveyor / Senior Cost Manager position.

Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to join a growing cost management team offering exposure to a varied project portfolio, established client relationships and a collaborative working environment.
You will benefit from ongoing professional development, mentoring and support from experienced APC counsellors and assessors, helping you consolidate your technical expertise, achieve chartership and progress your career.
With flexible working arrangements, a broad range of projects and opportunities to develop your commercial and leadership skills, this role offers an excellent next step for an ambitious Quantity Surveyor looking to build a long-term career in consultancy.
If you are approaching chartership and looking for a role that offers greater responsibility, varied projects and a clear route for progression, we would be keen to hear from you.
