Senior Project Engineer Heavy Systems
Are you an experienced rail engineer with a strong understanding of how complex railway systems such as track, OLE come together?
Have you worked on major infrastructure projects where engineering integration, problem-solving and effective contractor coordination have been critical to delivery?
Salary: £65,854 – £77,474 including Flex Fund
Location: Birmingham (Snow Hill, transitioning to Washwood Heath site), 2 days from home
Closing Date: 28 October 2026
I am recruiting for a Senior Project Engineer – Heavy Systems to support the delivery of the £856m Washwood Heath Depot contract, a flagship element of HS2''s railway infrastructure programme.
This is a high-profile opportunity to play a key role in bringing together the engineering systems and infrastructure required to deliver a fully operational depot. My client is looking for a proactive, solutions-focused engineer who understands how different rail disciplines interact and can identify and resolve potential issues before they impact construction, commissioning or programme milestones.
This is not a traditional engineering assurance role. It is a hands-on engineering integration position, focused on making sure designs, construction activities and technical interfaces align to enable successful project delivery.
Essential Requirements
- Strong engineering background within rail systems, with experience in track, OLE, traction power or associated heavy rail infrastructure.
- Experience in engineering integration, multidisciplinary interface management or coordination across major infrastructure projects.
- Broad understanding of how railway systems interact with civil engineering works and wider infrastructure.
- Experience working on large-scale, complex projects alongside Tier 1 contractors or major delivery organisations.
- Proven ability to identify technical issues, investigate solutions and work collaboratively to resolve problems before they affect delivery.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management and negotiation skills, with the confidence to challenge engineering decisions constructively.
- Experience taking ownership of engineering activities and delivering tangible project outcomes.
- Ability to interpret engineering designs and understand their implications for construction and installation.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience delivering rail depots or major railway infrastructure programmes.
- Experience across both design and construction delivery environments.
- Knowledge of railway systems integration, commissioning interfaces and construction assurance.
- Understanding of light rail systems, including signalling, SCADA and telecommunications.
- Experience coordinating contractors working at different stages of design and construction maturity.
Interested?
If you have a strong background in heavy rail systems, enjoy solving complex engineering challenges and want to play a meaningful role in delivering a major infrastructure project, I would be keen to hear from you.
