Our team helps businesses navigate complex controversy and proactive engagement with HMRC (including via enquiries and disclosures), combining broad technical and sector knowledge with dispute resolution techniques and insights into HMRC’s approach and processes. We are experts in our field and foster a collaborative team culture across our Tax business. As a tax controversy-focused Senior Manager, you’ll help clients manage tax disputes to resolution, support proactive HMRC engagement (including voluntary disclosures and Business Risk Review+ discussions), and play a key part in evaluating and mitigating tax risk. The role is predominantly corporate tax-focused and experience with multi-million-pound organisations is a critical component of success.Responsibilities
Manage the delivery of tax controversy projects, ensuring technical and commercial excellence while directing key activities across the engagement team; advise on shaping outputs to meet the client’s needsMaintain relationships with clients and, where relevant, the wider multi-disciplinary team, plus key HMRC stakeholders, delivering high levels of client serviceDay-to-day client liaison and coordination across the wider tax team in relation to engagementsGrow relationships within the firm and externally with clients; proactively identify opportunities and contribute to winning new engagementsSupport pursuit of tax certainty for clients, working with Partners to evaluate likely dispute outcomesReview reporting obligations, prepare tax strategy and policy, and evaluate tax riskCoordinate support for SAO certification and Business Risk Review+; develop testing programmes to ensure controls are operating effectivelySkills and Attributes for Success
Corporate tax practitioner or HMRC Inspector (Grade 7 or above)Strong, broad tax technical skills with a drive to develop furtherClient-focused and commercially aware; able to build strong relationships at all levels and manage expectationsProven ability to analyse and interpret existing and new tax statutes and deliver quality output with team supportStrong project management skills; ability to plan, prioritise, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines; monitor engagement budgetsAbility to identify risks, conduct effective reviews and know when to escalateA keen interest in ongoing learning and innovation, including using technology and AI tools to improve processesQualifications
ACA/CA/ACCA/CTA with experience in a corporate tax-focused role working with multi-million-pound clients; orTax Inspector experience with full Technical Training Course (IDP/TPDP/TSP, etc) – Grade 7 or aboveIdeally, you’ll also be
