Electronics Technician
We are working with an innovative, R&D-led technology business in Bedford that is developing technology with the potential to make a significant impact across the wider technology sector.
The business is moving beyond the research and development stage, with its first product preparing to enter production and several additional products progressing through prototype development.
With multiple design engineers working on proof-of-concept projects, there is a growing requirement for skilled, in-house PCB assembly and rework capabilities. Rather than relying on external prototype manufacturers and waiting weeks for boards to be populated or modified, the business carries out this work internally.
This is where you come in.
We are looking for an experienced Electronics Bench Technician to work alongside a highly experienced Senior Technician, supporting PCB assembly, soldering, rework, prototype builds and general electronic and mechanical assembly.
This is a hands-on position where practical ability, attention to detail and a genuine passion for electronics are far more important than formal qualifications. You will play an important role in supporting the engineering team and helping take new products from initial concept through to production.
Key Responsibilities
Hand assemble and populate PCBs from scratch, working with both through-hole (PTH) and surface-mount (SMD) components, including components down to 0201.
Carry out PCB rework, repairs and modifications using specialist soldering, desoldering and inspection equipment.
Work under a microscope when assembling and inspecting fine-pitch components.
Build prototype electronic assemblies, test equipment and bespoke test fixtures, including bed-of-nails test rigs.
Manufacture and assemble cable looms and wiring harnesses, including wire preparation, routing and terminal crimping.
Complete electrical box builds, mechanical assembly and product disassembly.
Interpret and work accurately from bills of materials (BOMs), engineering drawings and assembly instructions.
Carry out visual inspections and record assembly, testing and rework results accurately.
Identify and source electronic components using online supplier portals and assist with raising purchase orders.
Maintain a clean, organised and ESD-compliant workstation, following all relevant procedures.
Provide practical support to the wider engineering team, adapting to changing priorities and project requirements.
Skills & Experience Required
Demonstrable hands-on experience in PCB assembly, hand soldering and electronic rework.
Experience working with both through-hole and surface-mount components.
Good understanding of electronic component identification, polarity and orientation.
Excellent attention to detail and the ability to produce consistently high-quality solder joints.
Experience with cable assembly, wiring harnesses, box builds or electronic test equipment.
Confident using soldering equipment, electronic hand tools and standard inspection equipment.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, BOMs and assembly instructions.
A practical, resourceful approach to problem-solving, with the confidence to work independently.
Good organisational skills and the ability to manage changing workloads and priorities.
Understanding of ESD procedures and general workshop health and safety.
Basic IT skills, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel.
Desirable Experience
The following would be advantageous but are not essential:
BGA component assembly and rework experience.
IPC or J-STD certification.
Familiarity with Altium Designer or Altium Viewer.
Previous experience within an R&D, prototype or low-volume manufacturing environment.
Background in defence, aerospace, automotive, medical electronics or other high-reliability industries.
Don''t worry if you don''t tick every box. The business is more interested in practical ability, attitude and a willingness to learn than a perfect list of qualifications. There will be an opportunity to develop further skills and learn directly from an experienced technician.
