The opportunity
An established structural engineering consultancy is looking to appoint a Project Structural Engineer to support the delivery of a broad range of building structures schemes. This role would suit an engineer who enjoys technical design, client interaction and working as part of a close-knit project team.
- Prepare structural designs for building projects across steel, concrete, masonry and timber, producing clear calculations and supporting technical drawing reviews.
- Work to relevant codes, regulations and industry guidance, ensuring designs are compliant, practical and well documented.
- Assist with design risk reviews, specifications, technical reports and method statements as projects progress.
- Take ownership of allocated work packages on medium and larger projects, with support from senior engineers when needed.
- Coordinate your workload to meet agreed deadlines, keeping project information accurate, organised and easy to follow.
- Carry out site inspections, surveys and visits to both new and existing structures, then summarise findings in concise written reports.
- Use structural analysis, design and documentation software to support efficient project delivery.
- Communicate clearly with colleagues, clients, contractors and design partners throughout the project lifecycle.
- Keep project administration up to date, including time recording, expenses and relevant project documentation.
About you
- You will bring a positive, inquisitive approach and be comfortable asking questions to fully understand technical information.
- Clear communication is important, as you will be expected to explain design decisions and technical detail to a range of audiences.
- A strong eye for detail, sound engineering judgement and a methodical approach to checking information will be key.
- You should enjoy working with wider design teams, including architects, contractors, clients and other engineering disciplines.
- The role requires someone commercially aware, client-focused and keen to contribute to successful project outcomes.
- Applicants will typically have 3–5 years’ structural engineering experience and will either be chartered or actively progressing towards chartership.
- You should be developing confidence in representing a consultancy in project discussions with clients, managers and design teams.
- This position suits someone ready to take on more technical ownership and grow into leading design packages independently.
- Confidence attending meetings, workshops and site visits will help you build strong working relationships across project teams.
- A commitment to ongoing professional development and long-term career progression is expected.
Qualifications The successful candidate is expected to hold an MEng, or equivalent qualification, in Civil or Structural Engineering and be working towards professional chartership if not already achieved.
Software experience Previous experience using structural design, analysis, specification and reporting software would be useful. Packages such as MasterSeries, SCIA and NBS, or comparable tools, would be advantageous.
