Maintenance Technician (Rolling Stock
Job Title: Maintenance Technician (Rolling Stock)
Location: Bedford
Salary: £44,000 – £49,000 (including shift allowance)
Role Type: Permanent; Rotating shifts (days, nights & weekends)
Are you a hands-on engineer looking to get into the rolling stock sector or build on your existing rail experience? This is a great opportunity to join a busy depot environment with strong earning potential, solid training and long-term progression.
We’re looking for multiple Maintenance Technicians to support the delivery of safe, reliable trains – whether you’re already in rail or coming from a related industry like heavy vehicles, plant, buses, armed forces or maritime.
The Role and About You:
You’ll be part of a team responsible for the maintenance and servicing of rolling stock, carrying out both planned and reactive work to keep fleets moving and performing as they should.
This is a dual-skilled role, but we’re open to people who are stronger either mechanically or electrically – the key is having a solid engineering background and the willingness to learn and develop further.
It’s a proper depot environment – fast-paced, safety-critical and team-driven. You’ll be working shifts (days, nights and weekends), but in return you will receive a strong overall package with shift allowance taking earnings up into the £44k–£49k range.
Whether you’re already in rolling stock or looking to make that move from a similar sector, this is a good opportunity to get into (or progress within) the rail industry.
Key responsibilities:
Carrying out planned maintenance and reactive fault finding on rolling stock.
Supporting fault diagnosis and repairs across mechanical and electrical systems.
Ensuring all work is completed safely and in line with required standards.
Working closely with team members to meet fleet availability and performance targets.
Recording work carried out and updating maintenance systems.
Supporting continuous improvement and reliability initiatives.
Maintaining high standards of housekeeping and safety across the depot.
About you:
Level 3 qualification in an engineering discipline (essential).
Background in a relevant industry – rolling stock, HGV, buses, heavy plant, automotive, armed forces, maritime or similar.
Experience in maintenance, fault finding and repair.
Mechanical or electrical bias – both considered.
Good approach to health & safety in a live environment.
Able to work shifts including nights and weekends.
Team player with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
The company:
A well-established name within the rail industry, responsible for maintaining and servicing modern rolling stock fleets across the UK. The depot environment is professional, structured and safety-focused, with clear processes and support in place.
They’re known for bringing people in from outside of rail and giving them the tools to succeed, so it’s a great move if you’re looking to transition from your current industry sector into Rail. Ongoing training, development and progression opportunities are all part of the package.
With multiple vacancies available, it’s a good time to get in and be part of a growing team.
