We offer opportunities to develop specialist surgical intensive care and pathway-based high dependency nursing skills.Doulton HDU is a 10-bed unit that cares for level 2 patients following elective cardiovascular pathways and surgeries requiring complex support, such as non-invasive ventilation, high-flow oxygen therapy, thrombolysis, inotropes and pathway-based recovery from various surgical procedures.Please note

Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, including history taking, physical examination and the requesting of diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.Be responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products.Assess and recognise emergencies in the speciality, interpret information, take appropriate action and lead others to do the same.Ensure patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, respecting their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.Provide leadership, support and guidance to staff in planning, delivery and evaluation of individualised care.Maintain accountability for practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and continually develop knowledge and competence.Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced clinical skills; carry out specialist nursing procedures as appropriate.Maintain confidentiality of patient records and ensure safe disposal of body fluids to minimise cross-infection risks.Communicate effectively with patients, carers and families regarding disease, treatment and management.Support a high-quality, cost-effective specialist service through monitoring, audits and quality initiatives as agreed by the Trust.Identify and mitigate unsafe environments for patients and staff; alert the Sister/Charge Nurse as needed.Support learning environments for pre- and post-registration learners and participate in developing appropriate programmes.Contribute to the Trust’s clinical supervision programme and assist in developing a culture that is challenging, rewarding and supportive.Act as mentor/assessor to unqualified staff and provide education, advice and support to a nursing team.Utilise research findings to enhance patient care, develop new workflows and disseminate relevant information to staff.Maintain accurate records, uphold patient confidentiality and manage own workload and caseload.Participate in risk assessment and promote a no-blame culture; support implementation of risk-reduction strategies.Foster clear communication between patients and health care professionals to meet individual needs.Person Specification
