This is a replacement Consultant post with a remit to work within the multidisciplinary team, providing and developing care for orthopaedic patients and sub-specialist elective surgery services at PRUH/Orpington. The post holder will contribute to the general workload of the department and have a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff. The post will be primarily based at Princess Royal University Hospital with a commitment to surgical services at other Trust sites as required. The Trust may require flexible regional work in the future.
Job SummaryThis is a replacement Consultant post. The post holder will work within the multidisciplinary team to provide and develop care for orthopaedic patients and sub-specialist elective surgery services at PRUH/Orpington. The role includes contributing to the general workload and teaching/training of junior staff. The proposed Job Plan is attached.
Key Duties And Responsibilities
Together with colleagues, provide high-quality care to patients, including all treatment and management duties for the Care Group.
Provide 24/7 cover for the Unit on a rota basis, including covering colleagues during annual leave and sickness as detailed in the contract.
Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultants.
Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties; contribute to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
Fulfil outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team.
Contribute to Care Group research in line with the Trust RandD framework.
Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance, and Learning from Deaths.
Contribute to Care Group Business Plan formulation, implementation and monitoring; engage with service planning with internal and external agencies.
Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan.
Provide professional leadership for all staff in the specialty; support education and training initiatives.
Support productivity and staff satisfaction; participate in appraisal processes where appropriate.
Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with management and Clinical Directors.
Comply with Trust infection prevention and control policies and maintain patient safety.

Person SpecificationQualifications
Registerable medical qualification
FRCS Orth or equivalent
Desirable: Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
Registration
Full GMC Registration
GMC Specialist Register or CESR pathway
Experience
Experience in orthopaedic major trauma surgery and trauma foot and ankle management
Fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery
Equivalent to consultant
Desirable: Experience in complex foot and ankle trauma and broader elective foot and ankle surgery including minimally invasive techniques
Administration
Experience in day-to-day organisation of surgical services in a busy teaching hospital
Desirable: Familiarity with current health service structure and recent initiatives
Management and Leadership
Demonstrated leadership within multidisciplinary teams
Desirable: Management course/qualification
Audit
Understanding of medical audit principles; completed audit projects
Desirable: Relevant research experience; publications or case reports
Research and Teaching
Understanding of research methodology; publications and presentations relevant to the role
Desirable: Experience managing research projects in large teams; multicentre collaboration
