FINANCIAL CONTROLLER - MANUFACTURING / ENGINEERING

THE OPPORTUNITY:

We''re partnering with a highly successful and established manufacturing business that is looking to recruit an experienced Financial Controller / Finance Manager / Head of Finance to lead the finance function across a multi-company operation.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you''ll be the number one person in finance, managing a small team whilst remaining hands-on with management accounts, cashflow, forecasting, VAT, year-end and financial reporting.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a strong background in SME Manufacturing or Engineering who enjoys taking full ownership of the finance function, providing commercial insight to senior management and supporting the continued growth of the business.

THE FINANCIAL CONTROLLER ROLE:

• Reporting directly to the Managing Director, taking full responsibility for the finance function across multiple companies
• Producing monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet, cashflow reporting and detailed financial analysis
• Preparing financial reports and presenting key financial information, trends and performance to the Board
• Managing budgeting, financial forecasting and cashflow planning to support business operations and future growth
• Taking responsibility for month-end and year-end accounting processes, ensuring accurate and timely reporting
• Managing VAT returns, including import VAT, deferred VAT and associated reconciliations
• Overseeing purchase ledger, sales ledger, credit control and payroll activities, ensuring effective financial controls
• Managing multi-currency transactions, nominal ledger postings, bank reconciliations and balance sheet control accounts
• Maintaining accurate fixed asset records, including depreciation calculations and reconciliations
• Working closely with external accountants, auditors and HMRC regarding year-end accounts and statutory requirements
• Supporting the preparation and submission of R&D tax relief claims
• Reviewing bonus and commission calculations, preparing accurate figures for Director approval
• Ensuring financial information from the ERP system is accurately reflected within the accounting records
• Managing, supporting and developing a small finance team, whilst remaining hands-on with day-to-day accounting activities
• Reviewing and improving financial systems, reporting procedures and internal controls to support business growth

THE PERSON:

• Qualified Accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA) or Qualified by Experience (QBE)
• Current experience within a Financial Controller, Finance Manager, Head of Finance or similar role, with a background in Manufacturing or Engineering business, in an SME environment.
• Proven experience managing a finance function and supervising a small finance team
• Strong hands-on management accounting experience, including P&L, balance sheet and financial reporting
• Confident managing cashflow, budgeting, forecasting, VAT returns and year-end processes
• Experience working with multi-company accounts and multi-currency transactions would be advantageous
• Knowledge of R&D tax relief claims within a manufacturing or engineering environment
• Strong accounting systems experience, ideally including ERP systems, alongside advanced Microsoft Excel skills
• Commercially minded with the ability to analyse financial performance and communicate effectively with senior management
• A proactive and hands-on individual who is comfortable managing the finance function whilst remaining involved in the detail
